Akil Mark Koci is a composer, pedagogue, music writer and arranger from Kosovo. He graduated from the Music Academy in Sarajevo, studying theoretical specialisation in 1962. Koci was a professor at the Faculty of Arts in Prishtina, Kosova.
Akil has been recognised and awarded many significant awards, including the annual award of the Kosova Composers' Society and he was presented with an award for the first Albanian ballet of Kosova, "Sokoli dhe Mirusha". Several times, Akil occupied the position of the secretary, vice-president and president of the Kosova Composers' Society as well as the president and vice-president artist for the Music Society of Yugoslavia. He is equally and actively engaged both in the domain of composition and musicology. In the scope of the latter, he has written over 250 critiques, essays and analyses published in various newspapers and magazines. Koci is also a member of the editorial board of the music magazine "Zvuk", Sarajevo (The Sound), and "Nota" (The Note).
As one of the most distinguished representatives of Albanian contemporary music of Kosova, his works have been performed and recorded in over 50 countries. Koci is one of the founders of festivals of serious music including "Music Scene" in Prishtina, "Days of Kosovar Music" in Gjakova and "The Music Accords of Kosova" in Prishtina. He has also participated in many festivals of serious music in Europe, for example The Music Bienalle in Zagreb and VIII Festivals of Contemporary Music in Paris (UNESCO).
Meet the Composer
How old were you when you started writing music? I was sixteen and at secondary school. Now, I am sixty-eight.
Where did you learn music? First at school in Kosovo and then at University in Sarajevo, followed by postgraduate studies.
When did you write this song? In February 2004. This is a new song and is part of a group of four about the seasons.
What inspired you to write this song? I was inspired by the descriptive poem written by Ndre Mjeda.
How many songs have you written? I have written over five hundred and they have been sung by Albanian singers in Albania and Kosova. My works, which also include music for ballet, have been performed in over fifty countries from here to Argentina.
How many instruments do you play? I play piano and violin. I learnt at school and now I teach.
How long have you been teaching music? For fifty years!
