Meet the Composer

Nicky, Carol and Tom - members of the City of Birmingham Young Voices - met with Lin before one of their rehearsals.

How did you go about writing this song? What tends to come first is the idea for the song; usually the first line of the lyrics comes with the music.

What was your inspiration for the song? I was walking by the sea and thinking how free it was to just go where it wanted. That made me think that if you really want to do something, you can - so long as you have confidence in yourself.

What are your musical influences? I started learning the piano at eight, so music was always a huge part of my life. I love moving: I love dancing and I love theatre, and I've never separated them.

You know you said your inspiration was the sea: where do you like to compose? All over the place! When I'm walking, when I'm sitting looking at scenery, when I'm driving; the ideas tick over all the time. You can go to bed struggling with a particular idea and when you wake up the line is there. It's really weird! I compose all the time.

When did you start getting into composing? The first thing I remember was when I started to play the piano and struggled to write something down on a piece on paper. It was a love song, would you believe? Something like 'by the waterfall with you, any dream can come true!'. It had these funny plodding chords accompanying it!

How many songs have you written? It's somewhere close to three hundred!

Would you describe your music as being in a certain genre? The one you're singing is a pop ballad but much of my other work is music-theatre or even opera.

Have you any other interests besides music? I love going to the theatre and walking. I swim a bit and I spend a lot of time reading.
