The National Youth Choirs work to offer young people from all backgrounds the chance to enjoy the postive skills, energy and confidence that learning to sing gives. There are seven choirs across the country for different age groups, taking children from 9 up to 23 through auditions held nationwide. Residential courses and concert performances are led by music directors Mike Brewer and Deborah Catterall. Music of different styles, times and cultures is covered and there is an emphasis on enjoyment as well as learning. NYC also works with LEAs to provide workshops for children and teachers out of school hours. Bursary help is available to meet audition and course costs.
